Hitting net player om 1st serve
by Jim Kelly

Q: I am told that when serving, even on 1st serve, if prior to ball hitting court surface, I hit my partner we loose the point. If I hit opponent at net , we win point. Correct? How about if ball hits the player receiving the serve. If other is true, then we would win this point as well.

A: You are correct in part. If you serve a first serve and hit your partner it is only a service fault than you receive a second serve. If you serve a second serve and again hit your partner it's a double fault and the receiving team wins point. If either your first or second serve hits either of the receiving team on the fly you win the point. If a serve hits the net first than hits either receiving team's player on the fly or they were to catch the ball after it hits the net on the fly, it is a let and you play a let and server gets two serves. Hope that clears it up for you.
